Fulhealth Selenium Colloid (Selenium Methionine) is the anti-oxidant of the mineral kingdom. Of all the mineral resources you can provide your body with; for a healthy thyroid and liver, selenium is a necessity. Selenium is very important for thyroid function and is part of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase. Glutathione peroxidase in the thyroid helps quench free-radicals produced by the enzyme thyroid peroxidase (which functions to organify iodide as it enters the thyroid).

If high levels of iodide are present in the thyroid without sufficient amounts of glutathione peroxidase it causes free-radical damage to the thyroid, leading to autoimmune thyroid disease. Several of the enzymes that convert T4 into T3 also require selenium.

Almost every disease produces free radicals in the body. Free radicals are molecules containing unpaired electrons. These molecules will eventually steal electrons from other molecules that do not have evenly paired electrons in order to pair its lone electron. This is where selenium comes in. The body has a group of selenium bearing enzymes called glutathione peroxidase. It is called this because it transfers the electron to a sulphur containing protein called glutathione. The selenium which acts as the reactive centre in the enzyme, does this. So selenium is required for the synthesis of the glutathione enzyme. Now after that whole reaction has taken place, the free radical is now harmless and furthermore will stop the reaction of free radical creation.
